Language

Atlas Learning Zone is designed to cater to the learning needs of every student, no matter where they are on their learning journey. Learning Activities provide a comprehensive learning experience and require guidance from an adult, while Resources for Learning, Apply the Learning prompts, and Vocabulary lists work well to reinforce specific skills or encourage independent exploration of a subject.

Curriculum

Overall Curriculum Expectations

Language development plays a critical role in students’ intellectual, social, and emotional growth and is an essential part of the curriculum at Atlas Learning Zone. Our curriculum is based on the belief that literacy is fundamental to responsible and productive citizenship, and it aims to equip students with the knowledge and skills they need to achieve this goal.

Students acquire language knowledge through their life experiences and prior knowledge. At Atlas Learning Zone, students learn to identify and explore multiple perspectives, question the messages in texts, and examine issues related to fairness, equity, and social justice. As language is a vital element of identity and culture, students are encouraged to see themselves and others in the texts they read and oral and media works they engage with. Through reading and reflecting on a rich variety of literary, informational, and media texts, students gain a deeper understanding of themselves, others, and the world around them.

Our language curriculum comprises four strands:

  • Oral Communication
  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Media Literacy
